Purnimanta vs. Amanta Calendars
The Hindu calendar has two main variations:
- Purnimanta: The lunar month ends on Purnima. This calendar is followed in North Indian states like Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, and Madhya Pradesh.
- Amanta: The lunar month ends on the new moon day. This calendar is followed in South Indian states like Assam, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tripura, and West Bengal.
